Hot Tub Voltage Requirements

Hot tubs generally operate on two different voltage requirements: 120v and 240v.

A unit that is powered by 120 can be connected to a regular socket. But, you still need a ground fault circuit interrupted cord to prevent shocks.

A 240v unit tends to be larger, which means it needs its own dedicated power supply. A GFCI breaker should also be installed to enable instant shutdown incase of an electrical emergency. The breaker should be within 5-10 feet from the hot tub.

Pool Electrical Requirements

GFCI Protection

All pool and hot tub electrical must be protected by a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter). This device shuts off power instantly if a fault is detected, helping prevent electrical shock. GFCIs can be installed as breakers or outlets, and a Blue Collar Electric technician can determine the right option for your setup. A disconnect switch is also required and must be installed at least 5 feet from the water, within easy reach in case of emergency.

Pool Pump and Filter Power

Most pool pumps run on a dedicated 20-amp circuit and can be configured for either 120 or 240 volts. Some systems require a two-pole, 30-amp circuit depending on the setup. All pump circuits must be GFCI protected to ensure safe operation.

Underground Wiring

Underground wiring must be installed at least 5 feet from the pool or spa. The exception is wiring that directly serves pool equipment such as pumps, heaters, filters, or lighting.
